Now You Know!

Microwave Safe

Not sure if a dish or cup is microwave safe and you're not up for a bit of trial and error, you can test it by leaving it empty and placing it in the microwave along with a measuring cup filled with water. Heat both for one minute at the highest power and check the temperature of each one. If the dish or cup is cold and the water is hot, it's microwave safe, but if both are hot it's not!  Now you know!

Gas Range

Gas gets hot faster and is a more cost-efficient source of heat – but remember – when converting from an electric cooktop to gas, make sure to upgrade the range hood as well. Look for a hood that exhausts the number of cubic feet of air per minute recommended by the cooktop maker. Remember: A hood for an electric cooktop must exhaust only vapors from cooking food. A hood for a gas cooktop must also exhaust burner gasses.  Now You Know!

Installing a Smart Thermostat

Setback and programmable thermostats are so smart that they'll not only make your home more comfortable, but will conserve energy and save money, too.  Unless you live in a home built recently or have upgraded the original thermostat, chances are your thermostat isn't "smart." Setback and programmable thermostats are so smart that they'll not only make your home more comfortable, but will conserve energy and save money, too. How, you ask? Simple. A smart thermostat can be programmed to turn the heating system on just before you get out of bed in the morning; turn off about the time everyone leaves the home; turn on again just in time to have the home toasty for your return after a long day, and finally turn off just about the time you snuggle into bed.

Hand washing vs dish washer

Three distinct styles...this is a hard one to predict! Conservation-wise, hand washing comes in at 30 gallons. Machine and pre-rinse total 20 gallons, and machine-only wash used an amazing record-breaking 7.2 gallons! It's a gold-medal performance by today's new generation of automatic dishwashers!

Safe or Not

Something to Think about

Think about a rainwater tank.  Even in certain areas throughout the world some people are installing rainwater tanks to collect water to use in the garden or for the washing machine.
